66 427 Fuel Pump - Rebuild or buy Repro?

I have a 66 427 AC fuel pump for my June 390HP car. I think it's a reproduction pump, but it just started leaking like a sieve around the center crimped area. Should I just replace it with another AC reproduction pump or have this one rebuilt? $165 plus shipping for the pump from Paragon. Rebuilder recommendations?

Any other options? I saw an original on ebay, but it also needs to be rebuildt and the guy wants $80 for a non-working pump.

    Thanks for the input,
    Mark

Check Long Island. They may have some rebuilt originals for sale.

      Mark,

Does your 390 hp fuel pump have a set of numbers-letter stamped on the flange?

If yes, it could be original, post a pic we'll be able to tell.

In the forums there is a guy in California that does rebuild these, but you'll have a bit of a wait, etc etc...

Paragon and many others seell his rebuilt units, that's what's destined for my 66 390...

If you intend to drive the car and want it to be RELIABLE and SAFE, I would buy a NEW pump, either AC Delco or Airtex. They are both exactly the same pump manufactured by Airtex.

          Joe,

Are you saying that the rebuilt pumps aren't reliable for long term use or that they can't handle the alcohol in the fuel these days like I have seen some complain about? Or both?

          Thanks,

The '66 BB pump is a crimp pump, can it be rebuilt?

The issue of concern is crimped pumps were designed to be 'disposable' vs. the earlier 'screw together' units that were intended to be disassembled, overhauled and re-assembled.

To get at the 'guts' of a disposable pump, you have to de-crimp the case, remove it, replace the inner wear items, and re-crimp the case onto the body. Will there be metal fatigue from the de-crimp/re-crimp process that could eventually 'bite' you while on the road???

They may be rebuilt using materials that are alcohol-compatible. However, as Jack mentions, these pumps were never designed to be rebuilt and, personally, I am very uncomfortable with rebuilt pumps of this type. I don't like being stranded with a bad fuel pump and I don't like the compromise to safety that I consider exists with these rebuilt pumps. Therefore, I would not use one for a driven car. Ever.

In my opinion, trading reliability and safety for a few minor nuances of original configuration is just not a good trade-off.

                  Mark,
The guy that has the original AC tools uses the die cast cutting off the crimp, all the zinc dichromate is new. Call him, I sent that info to you...
