This is the style screen that was originally installed on my September, 1969 small block. I wish I had saved it. However, I do remember being somewhat "puzzled" when the first replacement I bought for it was the "square" mesh style screen. I don't know why I remember that minor thing, but for some reason it just stuck with me.

I believe the square mesh style screen came into use for the 1970 model year. It's possible that some VERY late 1969's used it, too.

      Re: A212CW air filter

My research consists of only a handful of 1970-1972 Corvettes with what could be factory original open element air filters -- sadly not including my own -- but they all looked like what Mark posted. That includes two 1972s, Joe. I hate to draw conclusions from such a small sample; however it is all I have. I do respect that others hold differing opinions, however.

Picture is a little on the small size Keith, do you have a larger file you could upload? (only shows 986 bytes)

This is a 212CW from a 1970 box. I owned a 72 mid production 3300 mile car that had its original 329C filter in it. That was the horizontal/vertical thin wire mesh like this filter.

              Re: A212CW air filter

My gut, based on what I have seen and read concerning Corvettes, Camaros, Chevelles and Novas, is at some point, maybe late 69 or early 70, both the expanded metal diagonal as well as the square mesh were seen and that sometime after that, the square mesh was seen much more consistantly. Dave's cars are so nice and original that I believe they provide an excellent example of what was factory eassembly line correct. It would require some hardcore research and a long time to pin down when and what was used for a given timeframe. I volunteer anybody but me to get that started.

Were all of the AC air cleaner elements manufactured in the same factory or did they have more than one factory producing them?

                      Joe

When I started working at AC in 1952, all GM filter applications were manufactured in the AC Flint manufacturing complex. Oil and gas filters were made at the Industrial Ave. plants and air filters were made in the Averill St. plant. The Center Rd. oil filter plant was built in about 1964 and high volume disposable oil filter production was moved there from the Industrial Ave. Plant. Over the next 10 years ( circa 1965-74) all production at Industrial Ave. was moved to the Center Rd. Plant and the Industrial Ave. Plant was closed. When I left AC in 1980, air filters were being produced at the Averill Plant and all other filters were produced at the Center Rd. plant. The AC Division was merged with the Rochester Products Division in the mid 90's to form the AC Rochester Division. Shortly after that the marketing of all AC and Delco brands were consolidated under the AC Delco brand. In subsequent years, the GM components Divisions were consolidated under the Delphi name which was ultimately spun off from GM as an independent company that became publicly held. However, GM retained the AC Delco marketing division throughout this time period ( and still does today as part of their GM Service Parts operation). Throughout this time period, AC Delco purchased replacement products from Delphi, and in some cases, other manufacturers to offer a full product line under the AC Delco brand.

Today, AC Delco purchases their replacement product lines to GM specifications from throughout the industry worldwide. The original AC manufacturing facility in Flint, Michigan has been torn down.

As a result, a GM or AC Delco geniune replacement part is a part made to GM specifications but in most cases, not produced in a GM facility.

"There is a guy selling an air filter that starts with "Best When Used" to me it looks like stamped the first three words.I dont know how to bring it over but it's on EBay Motors First page. When asked he played dum and said he found it at a yardsale.Any experts want to give thier opinion? I did put a bid in. Thanks,Jeff"

JEFF, the guy you refer to above that "played dumb" was me, and i told you that i bought it at a swap meet, not a yard sale!! Please get your facts straight if you want to lip beat me and accuse me of stamping in the Best Way, per your ebay question. I bought that filter at the Livonia Barn show on the sunday i listed it, 3 hours after i got it home. You must have thought it was real, as you bid up to $450, and was sniped by a copo guy from BC. Yes it looked like the one in the picture that John Hinckly showed above. I assure you that I would never sell an item i thought was a fraud, If you ask John Hinckley about me, I think he would give you a real answer.

BTW, I PAID THE MIGHTY SUM OF $2 FOR THE AIR FILTER. I DO NOT KNOW WHY ANYBODY WOULD BID ON THAT THING, WHEN THE REPOPS LOOK JUST LIKE THE REAL DEAL.

The picture John posted is my photo of my element, and there's plenty of difference between the repo and the real deal. I didn't say it was enough to justify 2K for an original (if you can find one) ,but.....
