    1968 Body Undercoating

How tough is the body undercoating judged, if it is judged? Do you leave it in tact as or is it ok to remove in a full restoration?

Alan I am not sure what your asking. If your question is about the wheel well undercoating if it is not there then that would be up to 20% deduct due the install is not complete. If that does not answer your question then you need to explain it better. Paul 18046

Alan, that's a good question. I just looked up the Exterior Judging Sheet for a 1968 exterior, and unlike the '67 Exterior Judging Sheet, the '68 Judging Sheet doesn't say a word about body undercoating in the wheel well area:

There are a few paragraphs about wheel wells and undercoating in the 1967 Judging Guide, but I have never seen a 1968 Judging Guide. If you remove the existing undercoating during the restoration, you will probably want to reapply an undercoating in the same area for sake of originality, but someone else will have to weigh in on the Judging aspect.

      Good luck!

        Alan,

Wheel well undercoating is judged under Chassis judging. The '68/69 TJM states that, " Undercoating is applied after the body color and before the blackout is done. The front wells are undercoated in various degrees toward the rear portions, behind the front tire. Rear wheel wells are undercoated in the rear portion, behind the rear tire and on the metal support plate located on the wall to inside of the tire. Check for inconsistency in the amount of undercoating between wheel wheel wells on the same side as a sign of repair. Check for obvious panel repair and excessive dirt."

The score sheet is located here under #9 Wheel Wells and Splash Pans and has a total of 30 points. https://www.ncrs.org/sinor/68-72%20S...%20Chassis.pdf
