    off-topic - '85 Chevrolet '454 P-30 (RV) ignition module problems

My RV, built on a 1985 Chevrolet P-30 Van chassis with 454 engine, has gone through 4 of the ignition modules (under the distributor rotor) in the 5 years I've owned it.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? I've been liberal with the heat sink grease on installation.

    Thanks
    Randy

I've been using the after-market parts.

      Thanks

a lot of after market ones do not have a built in voltage regulator. make sure your rotor has nylon screws to prevent high voltage arc thru to the module. make sure to use the correct grease as not all silicone grease is the same.make sure the sheet metal ground strap in the coil housing is not missing and the center cap contact is installed correctly

Didn't know about the regulator. Will go hit the local GM parts depot tomorrow.

          Thanks for all responses.

I use AC Delco parts almost exclusively, but THEY are now made in Mexico, China, Korea, and other foreign locations - Do YOU Get My Drift?

I mean no offense Ed, but the days of USA made auto parts are long gone. I could give you an item by item list of where the parts I bought over the last year have been made, but I will tell you the best was the front rotors for my former police car Caprice = Canada , but the rear rotors were from China. Oh and the rotors for the 2008 Z06 are not identified as to country of origin -- go figure.

Terry, you are correct , I run a AC Delco automotive repair shop and use some of the AC Delco parts in my shop, some of which are still pretty good, some of which I would not touch (JUST RE-BOXED PARTS). I have found that the modules reliabilty is still pretty good- maybe there blue prints on the modules haven't changed, but like you said made in MEXICO.

Those other manuf.of ing. modules like brog warner, standard ingnition, napa - Its good luck is all I can say.

I should have mentioned all those rotors came over-the-counter from Chevrolet in AC Delco boxes.

I got a PM telling me that if no country of origin is specified it is made in the USA. I was told in that PM the law only requires identity of the country of origin if it is not the USA.

I can't believe they wouldn't say "Made in the USA" even if they don't have to by law. Now THAT does indicate what is wrong with the management of the car companies, if it is the case.
