I just pulled the fuel pump off my '65 (300/327) and the rod that the actuator arm pivots on was gone. This is the second pump in a row that I have had this happen to. The first was 4 years old & 14,000 miles, this one was 7 years old & 8,000 miles (both were brand new Delco). I find this a very odd, unusual thing. I have another new one ready to install but was debating on whether to try something to retain the rod. It appears to be a pressed fit of steel into pot metal. Any thoughts or suggestions and has anyone else seen this? Thanks, Don H.

Re: 65 fuel pump
Donald;
This is more than likely not your problem (hope not), but I failed a several fuel pumps back in the early 90's (pivots and springs on an early 87 305 V8) due to having a cracked block (in the valley) which was allowing antifreeze to mix with the crankcase oil (Mobil1) internally. Apparently, the chemical mixture it produced attacked the spring and the pivot causing them to fracture. The only other symptom was a grease like substance that built up in places like the pump cavity and under the oil fill cap. The next thing that happened was a cam bearing turned shutting off oil to one bank of rockers.
I only mention this because you failed more than one and don't have a reason. So did I, but I figured out too late.
