    1979 UP6 CB power antenna...1st or 2nd design?

Hello again! Does anyone out there know when the factory, in the '79 run, stopped producing the 1st design power CB antenna which was the carryover from '78 and started with the 2nd design? Preferably with a vin #? Mine came to me with an incorrect 'post factory' antenna and I'm having a heck of a time figuring out which would've been correct for my car. Never mind that no one seems to carry them commercially. And if I'm not pushing my luck already, do you know the original part number for that antenna? Do you have one? Thank you.

First of all, it's real easy to determine which antenna your car was originally equipped with no matter what it's equipped with now. The 1978-E79 antenna had a metal housing and was attached to the fender well via brackets. The brackets attached to small plates riveted to the fender well. So, if your car has these plates or evidence of their once being present, then your car was equipped with the 1st design antenna assembly.

The 2nd design 1979 antenna assembly used a plastic housing and was not attached via brackets. So, if you have no plates attached to the fender well with rivets, then your car used the 2nd design antenna.

The above was the same regardless of whether the car was equipped with CB, or not. However, the power antennas involved were different for CB and non-CB.

For the 1978-E79 power antenna with CB, the part number was GM #5044911. However, this part was never available in SERVICE. In SERVICE it was known as GM #22010415. This part contained a GM #5044911 plus other parts for installation.

For the L79-81 antenna with CB, the part number was GM #5044954. This part was also a PRODUCTION-only piece and never available in SERVICE. In SERVICE, it was known as GM #22020559 and, later, GM #22038605, GM #22048609 and GM #12350652.

A replacement for the 1978-E79 antenna with CB remains available from GM under GM #12355706. It won't be configured anything like the original, but it will be 100% functional and the part which GM currently catalogs for your application.

The L79-81 power antenna with CB and all of its replacements are now GM-discontinued.

Using the above part numbers you can look for NOS examples. I think that finding the original parts in NOS form will be tough, though.

      Joe,

WOW! Thank you for that extended information! It's very helpful and many thanks to you! Tomorrow night I'll be under the rear fender looking for brackets and rivets, or scars from them, to figure out if I'm first design or second. Then the search will begin for the real deal (NOS) antenna for my car; as it only has 7800 original miles and I'm trying to bring it back to factory. I'm trying to get ready for Bloomington next year and it means alot to me...Thank you.

      Michael
