Ralph, Lacquer thinner, or mineral spirits. keep the laq. thinner away from the painted surfaces on car. use rubber gloves and steel wool to help with the thick areas.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Are you talking about paint that someone sprayed on or the factory undercoating? The undercoating can be removed by washing with mineral spirits. Its messy but comes off easily. To remove actual paint you could wash the area with lacquer thinner. Its strong stuff so have plenty of ventillation and wear rubber gloves.- Top

I think I would stay away from paint strippers. They will get on everything and it will be very difficult to clean up the mess. Laquer thinner will remove paint. It is a slow process and messy but you can control how much thinner you use and stay away from things that don't require stripping. Wet a rag and wipe it down over and over. You can always wrap a stick to get into hard to reach places.- Top

My car was the same way. I used fiberglass safe paint remover to get the majority of it off, and then the balance with lacquer thinner. Instead of steel wool I used stiff nylon brushes and plastic drywall knives and dipped them in lacquer thinner to get the gunk off. I damaged some of the paint, but I plan to repaint the car anyway. If you try paint remover, be sure to cover the car with thick plastic.- Top
