    Chevy name dropped

Earlier this morning, the New York Times reported that on Tuesday, General Motors sent a special memo to Chevrolet employees at its Detroit headquarters politely suggesting they ditch the "Chevy" moniker for "consistency" of the brand.

The Detroit automaker responded with an official statement which more or less supports the use of the 'Chevy' nickname by consumers and fans alike (as if GM could do anything to stop them...), but says nothing about its employees. That said, it appears GM staff are indeed being told to avoid saying Chevy when referring to Chevrolet.

Good to see they have all their big problems under control and now can concentrate on tweaking fine points.

It also raises a corollary question: Is it no longer acceptable for refer to a Cadillac as a "Caddy"?

I guess they no longer need to worry about use of the terms "Olds" and "Poncho".

Now, as far as Buick is concerned, when one of my miscreant high school buddies used his '49 Roadmaster to mow down rows of No Parking signs, we just called it "The Tank".

I wonder how long it is until we no longer refer to GM as GM!

Too many people, even on this site, seem to refer to General Motors as Government Motors, so I think that ship has sailed Martin.

While I was editor of The Corvette Restorer I avoided the use of “Chevy” and “Vette.” I believed, and still do, that both are poor form for a publication. Casual conversation is one thing, but I believe a publication that will live beyond all of us should have higher standards. Unfortunately as Internet use and texting have increased we have become more casual in our usage – although I hasten to point out that Vinnie also avoids those abbreviations. And neither Vinnie nor I needed a memo to tell us what to do.

FYI, they posted a memo today stating now that Chevy is "just fine" with them. I think the uproar was too much.

Even if they did try to "distance themselves" from the "Chevy" moniker, I'll bet that didn't go as far as giving up that moniker as a GM-owned trademark. When they go that far, they're serious about it. Until then, they're not serious about it. I think you'll find that "until then" won't occur until the people in hell get icewater.

                        Gentlemen-
Least we not forget one of Chevy's GREATEST moniker's: "The Bowtie". Are we supposed to stop using that too? It's all too silly, at least for me.

Thats funny, I always thought GM stood for "going mad". Now that I had to pay $100.00 bucks to get my donut spare on my new Malibu - I guess it stands for GONE MAD.
