    Broach Marks and Pad Stamps

If you have pics of pads showing original broach marks and stamps can you please post? I have reviewed previous posts/pictures and I am looking for variations in the broach marks as the tools wore and also stamp variatons. Some are very pronounced while others are barely visible. Including the engine date would be great also. I am most interested in 265, 283, and 327 but all will give me a good idea.

    Thanks!

    Steve

A lot of people will dump on me but all this broach mark discussion for the most part is crazy. You'll get so many opinions from judges and different looking marks you'll never know what to think. Same goes mostly for the numbers . Been in ncrs from the start and this will never end. When they look at any of my Corvettes I just sit back , have a beer then take a nap till they end arguing and accept it.

Hi Roy! I know that opinions run all over the place. Probably as many as we have members. I will probably never have my car judged and since it has the marks and stamps from when I bought it in '64 and the previous owners told me they never had the engine out (and no one restamped then) I am certain that I have the originals on the pad. My interest lies mainly in how long the cutting tools lasted and the extreme variations of the marks. I have a pretty good idea of the stamps depth variations. My marks are so light that a tool change likely came soon after my engine, but having been a machine shop supv. and a production supv. decades ago in a UAW shop I know much tooling was used well beyond its life to keep the lines going.

Anyone know how many cuts/passes they usually took?

                    Thanks,

One pass, two surfaces at a time. The deck (2), oil pan rails, and top of block.

I was told by a GM employee that was familiar with the broach process that the difference in the "marks" was relative to the sharpness/dullness of the blade.

In principal, using wood working as an example, the broach tooling is nothing more than a 300 ton block plane. The force that it takes to move the block thru is tremendous. When one of the manufacturers started using thin wall casting, they had problems ripping the main bearing webs right out of the block. That area of the building literally shakes. I have been in the old Flint plant and the old IHC Indy engine plant. In the 50's thru the '90's all the blocks were machined this way.

I believe F**d is the first US manufacturer to go with rotary machining when they started building their modular engines.
