    GM division codes: what's "5" ?

    Of course we all know that "1" is Chevrolet, and "2" is Pontiac. Then there's Buick and Oldsmobile (can never remember which is "3" and which is "4", or other). So what is "5" ? There's a '69 Muncie trans on eBay with "5Bxxxxxx" (B for Baltimore final assy. ?).

    Wayne -

    "5" was GMC Truck; "3" was Oldsmobile, "4" was Buick, and "6" was Cadillac.

    Can't imagine that "5BXXXXXX" making any sense - "5" was GMC medium and heavy trucks, none of which used Muncie 4-speeds (GMC light trucks, which Baltimore built, used the "T" prefix, and they didn't use the Muncie 4-speed either). Baltimore also built "A"-bodies (Chevelle, etc.). Must be a stamping error.

      I do believe the sm 465 muncie was used in GMC trucks . They were the old 4000 series back in the 60's. Then some newer models up into the 70's and even early 80's. I was a heavy/ medium truck parts dist. for many years. We always stocked a sm 465 with a GM input shaft. Old school buses used it. Then they were cut down and used for watermelon trucks. It was a fairly fast mover for us in the spring. Tom

        Here's the eBay link; definitely a '660' maincase. You have to scroll down to see the seller's multiple pictures. I attach a closeup of the VIN derivative.

          Here is a link with lots of GM plant information...

          General Motors Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) equipment codes.

          The VIN stamp on this trans is 1969

          59Bxxxxxxxxx

          The casting itself is 4th week, November

          P9T21A the Muncie P stamp - crooked letters! I'll have to look at my photos of know Camaro N plant stamps that did not survive the HP shock.

          P = Muncie
          9 = 1969 MY
          T= December
          21= 21 of December
          A = M20

          Wayne a relatively common case - if you need one...
