69 Steering Column Question for Jim Shea

Jim,
Can the lower T/T steering column shaft bearing be replaced while the column is in the car or does the column need to be removed? My telescoping shaft seems siezed to the brg.

In order to remove the lower bearing from the steering shaft you have to disconnect the steering column shaft from the flexible coupling on the gear. This requires that you either drop the steering gear to gain clearance or you need to disconnect the steering column and pull it back into the driver compartment.

So after doing the above, why reach over the fender; under the brake master cylinder; and then have to wrestle with a lower bearing that is probably rusted in place. Since you have already done 75% of the work to remove the steering column from the car, why not completely remove the column where you will have good access to the lower bearing.

You're certainly right about that. I was hoping to avoid removing the column, but I don't think there is any choice at this point. I really appreciate your help as always!
