I'm looking for the correct voltage across the battery at idle. Mine was putting out 17 volts until I found the ground was broke at the regulator after correcting the ground it came down to 13 volts at idle. What is the ideal voltage across the battery at idle ? Thanks

Re: 64 Voltage Regulator Out Put
I don't know that there is an answer to that question. It would depend on a lot of factors. The output is a function of battery condition, rpm, draw, and a lot of other things. At idle, if it charges a little, with some, maybe not all of the lights and accessories on, it is OK. If it keeps the battery up during normal operation with all of the accessories on, it is OK.- Top

Re: 64 Voltage Regulator Out Put
A better test is to increase engine speed and see if the voltage comes up. You can also turn the headlights on and off while monitoring batt voltage. It should not change much. Finally, check the voltage after driving it enough to fully charge the battery. It then should be around 14.4V, +/- some. If you had an open ground the voltage can go very high, like you said. That can take out the diodes in the alternator, so you could have a problem. -Dan-- Top
