65 Bumper braces ?

I have the bumpers off my 65.I am about to put on new ones and I am looking at the manual page 75. It clearly states that the braces for the turn downs are painted semi-gloos black. I believe mine to original and they are chrome. What is correct??? Please advise. I can paint mine no promlem but don't want to if not correct........ Thanks Tom

Not sure exactly what you are referring to, but all the parts that bolt onto the chrome bumpers are black, especially the two that attach under the front crossmember if those are the one's you are referring to. Parts welded to the bumpers were chromed with the bumpers, so easy to figure out what you need to have.

Rear bumpers have 1 brace on each side . They are underneath the part of bumper that goes down and they go through the rear valance. They are bolted on each end. Mine are chrome, the manual clearly states that they shoul be black?? What to do go with the manual or go with what came on the car? Believed to be original. Tom

Sorry I was in front, you are in the back, but the answer doesn't change, black if bolted to the chrome bumpers.

Bill, think he is talking about pn 3797421 shown in the 64AIM, Sec 14 sheet B1.00 I did check my 71 P&A Catalog which shows that number in Gr 7.836A and good for 63-67.

I have a NOS piece and two originals on my Mar64 car (owned since 1967 and documented back to original owner) All Three are natural or perhaps zinc coated.

As with you, I've taken a number of rusty ones off cars, never was a chrome one, I believe over the counter "back in the day..." they came natural, but black wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility although similar parts in the rear, metal pieces on muffler hangers and the like were left natural, so very possible natural, but not chrome.

I may be mistaking a Zinc type coating for chrome? But anyway most or all would have been painted black correct? I just want to try and get things as correct as possible. I plan to use this car as a nice weather driver, but still want things right. Thanks for all the input. Tom Stanton# 41491

The bumpers are the only part of the rear bumper assembly that is chrome. All the brackets are s/g black. The bolts are zinc or cad clear.
