    63_ Exhaust leaks (unwanted noise)

    63 convertible, SB

I have exhaust leaks (noise leaks) on both sides where the tail pipes join the header pipes, right in front of the cross-member. The u-bolt clamps are torqued down as tight as possible, and the joints are tacked in a couple of spots. I tried some exhaust joint and crack sealer, but that did not work. (Sealer applied after pipes were joined) I know the muffler shops can swedge the female side of a joint, but can they work both pieces to get a better seal? Suggestions?

Steve, Short of grinding the spot weld off and heating pipes to remove, the only other way is weld it up tight, but wouldn't do this myself, there a possiabilty that the pipes were not expanded properly, removed the pipes and buy some muffler sealant from the auto parts store and smear some on both sides of the pipe and re-clamp and let dry overnight if possiable.

Removing the pipe that are clamped together may require a torch if the clamps were overtightend, they tend to crush both pipes and removel makes it harder without a torch.
