    72 LS-5 (?) Coupe

I have a steel vacumm tank that sits inside the left front fender. Does anyone have any idea how this tank is mounted and how it goes into place? Assembly drawwings are no help and my photos don't show enough !

Rey, There are four 3/8 head bolts on the inside of the driver wheel housing. and you'll have to drop out the bottom, which will require removal of the rocker mldg. and the lower shield at fender.and possiably the charcoal canister.

All 1968-72 Corvettes have a vacuum reservoir tank mounted behind the driver side inner fender well. The tank is mounted via integral upper and lower brackets to the rear of the driver side inner fender well. There are 2 screws upper and 2 screws lower that enter from the wheel side of the fender well. You should be able to see the holes for these screws.

The tank can be difficult to install and remove due to the interference created by the master cylinder, and especially a power brake booster and master cylinder. In the case of the latter, I don't think it's possible to remove or install the tank with the booster and master cylinder also installed.

        Re: 72 LS-5 (?) Coupe

Access to the area rear of driver side fenderwell is no problem as everything in the way has been removed (see picture by my name) for cleaning and painting. My tank has 3 mounting feet (welded to tank) with two 1/4 20 topped holes each. This tank came out of this location. I can get it back into the correct place but the bolt holes (3 sets) don't line up so there in lies my problem with reinstalling. Is it posible that the tank may only use two of these mounts in the Vette and the third is for a different model application?
        Thanks -- Rey

Ray, I looked at my 72 the only seems to be 2 set of mounting bolts on my car, 1/4x20 bolts with a 3/8 head, two closest to fender and two midway up.

The vacuum reservoir tank used on Corvettes was a Corvette-only piece although similar tanks were used for some other Chevrolet applications in the 68-69 period and, possibly, later, too.

The tanks used for 68-69 and 70-72 were different inasmuch as the earlier tank had 2 vacuum fittings and the later had 3 vacuum fittings. However, I don't recall that the mounting was any different. In fact, the later tank replaced the earlier for SERVICE.

However, you can easily tell how many mounting points it actually used. Whatever number of holes there are in the inner fender that line up with the tank's brackets, that's how many mounting points were originally used. There's no way that any holes in the inner fender could have disappeared.

This sounds resonable -- I will check it out.

                Hi Rey,
My 71 uses all 3 mounting points.
I found the upper to be surprisingly high and close to the top of the fender and the outer to be VERY close to the beginning of the curve of the wheel opening lip. The lower is quite close to the mount for the charcoal cannister.
                Regards,
                Alan

I agree with Alan, my '71's show 3 mounting positions for the pairs of screws.

I'll add my 2 cents to Alan's. My '71 mounts the same as on Alan's with 3 mounting points behind the driver side wheel well.
