    Gasoline for Fuelies

Today's pump gasoline is really horrible for our old Rochestor Fuel Injection units. Too much ethanol. I like to drive my car often but the hot weather makes it a challange at best. I'd like to know what other early F.I. owners are doing for fuel for their cars. Are you running pure racing gas, Av gas, or a blend using good fuel and pump gas. What do you do and what are the results? Rich

I run 100 % racing fuel in my 64 FI and all is well. It runs great, hot starts are no problem and I don't worry about gas gumming up the system. I think that you will find much discussion of this issue in the archives.

In my 57 with a 4360 unit I started out using 100LL avation gas. It runs great but I drive the car a lot. I put 2000 miles on it in the last year.

Last summer I started using Shell 93 octane which containes no ethanol. The car runs, hot starts and cold starts perfectly. I still have 20 gallons of the 100LL which I will use up shortly.
The ethanol is a killer in the old FI units so avoid it at all costs.
Do a search of previous posts for some great info.

If you watched the Indy 500 you might have seen the advertisements for some organization in Brazil promoting ethanol in gasoline. Of course they didn't mention decreased gas mileage, high production costs and damage to fuel system components.

Keep corn in corn flakes not in our gas tanks.......

Here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia, I run normal pump gas (whatever brand is handy) in my'60 fuelie and I've learned how to work around the fuel percolation problem.

            Bruce,
How sure are you about the SHELL 93? I just went to our local SHELL station and there is a generic sign on the pump that says "May contain up to 10% Ethanol" I asked about the 93 octane V power but the attendant wasn't sure. I bought 5 gallons and will try to see if the problem is any better. I just spoke with Jerry Brammlett and he thinks a lot of these guys are adding more than 10% now. I'll let you know how I do with the SHELL

I have run 100LL avgas for about 30 years in my '60 FI. The fuel bowl stays clean and hot starts are no problem. Don H.

Shell 93 Octane where you are may not have ethanol, but in our state of Florida, all major brands are required to have it. The product promoted during the 500 was Sugar based ethanol, not corn. That's a good choice for Brazil, Hawaii, and Cuba, but in the U.S. midwest, corn is more plentiful.

I too have found how to live with this crappy gas in my L-76 - for now anyway, or until they find a way to make it out of that awful tobaco stuff, Ha!

It depends upon which part of the Country you're in.

Although the law limits ethanol content at 10%, I'm curious how accurately the final blending is done. The ethanol is added to the base/generic gasoline stock at the distribution point when the delivery tanker truck is loaded (ethanol can't be pipelined - has to be delivered to the distribution point by truck or rail tanker), along with the brand-specific additive package.

This thread on Corvette Forum deals with fuel for fuelies. Posting #7 describes in some detail how I get away with using ordinary pump gas in my car.

I run 100 LL in everything - 62 Fulie, 63 340's, 67 BB. They all love it. I also use a few oz's of Marvel Mystery Oil in the tank every few fill up's. Keeps all the rubber bits happy. I do the same in the plane!

How difficult is it to find the 100LL and what are the logistics of obtaining it?

Any airport has it. Trick is to get out on the ramp to fill up, find a good private one and it should be no issue.

All airports carry it, Mr B52 pilot extraordinaire, but of course you ony use jet fuel in your B52. Just ask the attendant to turn his back while you pump the av fuel into the Vette.....
