I've been working at installing new under-car exhaust on our '66. Having trouble with the system sagging down after a few miles, and difficulty with the tight clearances. Here's my question as it pertains to the long, somewhat straight exhaust pipe (the one that is clamped to the front riser pipes and passes through the dual ports in the frame): this pipe has a bend in it near the front. For the section of this pipe after the bend, which way should the pipe be positioned? That is, does the bend direct the remainder of the pipe up and down, or out to the side? Would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

If you lay the pipes on the ground, each long pipe should have the rear of pipe with bend facing out, Left side, faces left, right pipe will face right, in order to attach to mufflers. The up or down bends near front will be in correct position if rear of pipes are facing correct way ( only way ) The pipes should not sag if you have them clamped correctly at mid past through and in right position attached to muffler, which is hung by the hanger at rear of mufflers. Do not tighten any clamps ( including header pipes ) until mufflers are centered in rear panel holes and tranny clamp area. You may use some pipe cement to take care of exhaust leaks at joints. Make sure you push pipes all the way into each other.
If you have any of the Vendor books, (zip , corvette central or ecklers) it will show a picture of the line up.

Re: Help Needed Installing Under car Exhaust
Mark I had to use my impact gun to tighten clamps. If you don't have one place a pipe on the end of a ratchet to give more leverage. Good advice about centering exhaust . I placed wood under the exhaust to help position it and support it then snugged it up. I used a little silicone spray to help joints slip together. Good luck.- Top

Re: Help Needed Installing Under car Exhaust
We always used tall jack stands to support the exhaust before it was tightened up. We would raise the whole system as high as it would go, tighten the clamps, and when the stands were removed the system would be centeredDick Whittington- Top
