    AFB Rebuild

    Hi;

    I'm looking to rebuild an AFB for my '63.. Picked up a decent unit a couple of years back along with a rebuilding kit... Yesterday afternoon, I took the unit apart and found that it has the expected crud buildup inside.

    What's the best method of getting those castings cleaned up? Should I be using a conventional parts washer or something else?

    Thanks!

    Joel,

    If you want to clean it like new I believe the process would be tumbling and you can have that done if you have a local carburetor rebuilder in the area.

    Don't glassbead because the finish will not be correct. A small wire to carefully push through the holes and gum out carburetor cleaner will help remove crud. Be very careful not to damage any holes because the calibrations will be changed. Stock jetting should be .104 primary, .068 secondary and it's good.

    Pay attention to the throttle shaft for loosness and a flat base where it bolts to manifold. Doing this will achieve the results you are looking for.. One last thing, many people complain about hesitation after rebuild and the problem can be accellerator pump check valve. Put some ATF in the pump bore and push down with the old pump and look into the float area to see if the check valve is leaking. If it seeps you may have hesitation because valve is bad....

    These things I learned from talking to experts that took the time to help me. I can reccomend one, his first name is Bob and he knows his stuff and good guy...You may want to consider sending the carburetor to him for a rebuild..

        The best carb cleaner I have found is Berryman's Carb Cleaner. Contains methylene chloride. Comes in a small or a large pail with a dip basket. Carb residue will literally fall off the metal when used correctly.

        However, if you use, do it with plenty of ventilation and wear heavy-duty rubber gloves. This stuff is HARD on skin. Follow by a quick dip in gasoline and then blow everything clean and dry.

        Your carb will be clean. Used cleaner disposal is another matter....but you can save it for another job.
