63 L84 fuel filter inlet elbow

I've noticed that later 63 L84 cars tend to have a chrome elbow just before the fuel filter. I've also seen some ostensibly correct early cars with chrome fuel lines yet the elbow is brass. Does anyone know if the brass elbow with chrome lines is considered "correct" on some cars? If so, approximately when did the chrome elbow come in?

    Thanks,
    Mike

I don't but I would think that someone like John DeGregory would know. If he doesn't respond here you might e-mail him.

I could offer an assumption based on my L-76 (not and L-84). Mine has always had the chrome elbow into the filter (all supply lines and fittings to the carb), and is a early July build.

          Thanks,
Michael, This subject is a bit confusing. But my friend your question is also a tad confusing for this reason. Not I am not being demeaning as this is a learning experience. You said, "I've also seen some ostensibly(apparently?) correct early cars with "Chrome" fuel lines ............"
That would be incorrect Michael. Not typical of factory production. You see an early fuel car would not have chrome fuel lines. The early 63 fuel cars had zero chrome on them with the exception of the plenum lid flag.
The fuel lines would be plain. (unplated) The 90 degree elbow at the forward end of the filter was probably bare brass. I don't know if it was zincad or not but it definitely was NOT chrome.
You asked if the brass fitting is correct on any cars that used chrome fuel lines? Most likely it would be incorrect. I think we would like to see that fitting chrome plated.
You didn't ask Michael but every so often you see guys using a chrome fuel inlet fitting on the 63 to 65 FI cars. That also would be incorrect as the fitting was a zincad plated steel fitting. Even though some of the repro line kits include this fitting as chrome it is not.
As far as what early is and what is not early in a 63 I am not going to go there now as I am supposed to be working and the subject is beyond me. JD

Have to check my notes as to when the plain fuel lines went to chrome. probably early November but don't quote me. I just restored an Oct 20 something 62/63 FI unit and it has no chrome at all except for the flag. Oil filler tube and cap = semi gloss to gloss black. Balance tubes (2) are cadmium. Fuel lines should be bare although the customer bought them from a repro dealer in cad. Choke tube should probably be bare. Those early 63's are neat looking. Very refreshing.

i fully agree with the greensburg wizard. i would add that i had a 1st week of dec 62 360 hp and it had the lines and fittings consistent with the early 63's.mike

              Thanks, Guys,

John, by "early" I meant cars through December or January. I have a couple of pics from meets I've been to where fuel lines from L84 cars from January were chrome. One on those had the brass elbow and it was a Top Flight car. Maybe it got marked down for that, I don't know.

Mike, the reason I'm asking is that my late November L84 Duntov car has chrome lines and it had those parts when it was judged (I have pics). I can easily go to all brushed, but I don't want to change the parts, if they were original.

              Thanks,
              Mike
