    L88 at Mecum auction

Does anyone know what was wrong with the L88 at the Mecum Auction today. Silver car, black leather, letter from original owner?, Bloomington Gold, Top Flite NCRS, it brought $150,000 and was sold! I would said it couldn't have been the original motor, but at 150,000 it must have been a 351 Cleveland! What's the story??

While I have no knowledge of the car at Mecum's, provenance adds big money to such cars. Good cars with good docs, still are bringing strong money.

I saw the silver car. Looked at it myself. Didn't go over it with a fine toothed comb though. No clue of the status of the stamp or anything, but the car just showed, OK. Not a real stunner. If it were just a regular old small block car, we'd have called it a nice driver condition car.

Still a cool car. I love L88's. I don't think they will ever be in my price range............. even in a basket !!

Not all the Corvettes were down, the maroon benchmark 435 sold for 225 plus fees which is a pretty good number. A 72 LT1 TF car went for over 100. As far as the TA convertible, there was no real money on it or the swiss cheese car either for that matter.
Now to the L88, I saw the car on Friday with a beautiful tank sheet and pictures when new etc. The car itself was decent, an older resto with a restamp motor and an 80s issue GM front end but presnted pretty nice. I heard that the owner was in financial trouble and that the bank was going to let the cars fly. I came to talk to the owner on Saturday to review the tank sheet and to get a feel for what he needed to get and said that someone stole the tank sticker! I did not know what to think, maybe he was witholding it to sell it to the new owner or maybe someone did take it. The car goes on the block and I bid 145 and knew it was a real car but was reluctant to go higher because of the tank sheet mystery. Anyhow the car sells and later I was told that someone gave the tank sheet to Mecum and did not tell the owner as he was telling everyone it was stolen. I can't believe that the owner never told anyone at Mecum that the tank sheet was missing! That was a 100K mistake on his part.

After you described the car Steve, I think I have seen that car. You are right though, some big bucks left on the table.

Dick, I forgot to mention that you judged the car back in 89. I feel really bad for the seller of that car but someone got one heck of a deal. I may be wrong but I believe that Terry M bought it.

Steve, what was the VIN on the car? 17431 or 19533 perhaps?

I didn't see the L88 sell, but Terry M bought the Harley Earl car yesterday for $925K.

Jeez...I am getting old! I may have judged that car at BG and NCRS, but I suffer from NCRS (Never Can Remember Squat) disease
