Sorry John, not in 1968 to 1972. All those distributors, both Flint and Tonawanda, show no trace of orange on the distributor and no shadow from a coffee can on the intake either. The only logical conclusion is the distributor was installed after engine paint.

OK, all I can speak for from personal observation at Flint V-8 is through 1967; that was the last year I was in the plant (buddy of mine ran the piston department). They must have changed the process after 1967.

I wasn't at either Flint or Tonawanda as early as 1968, either -- all I can speak from is looking at a lot of 1968-1972 Corvettes.

At least well into the 70's, the distributor was installed prior to paint at Flint V-8; it was ever-so-precisely and carefully covered with a coffee can in the paint booth.
