I took my '64 327/300 4-speed out for a ride yesterday. I've had this car for 28 years, and this is the first time I experienced a grinding noise when shifting into 4th gear (normal driving). I was able to avoid the noise if I shifted from 2nd to 4th, but when shifting from 3rd to 4th, it would occassionally grind. I also noticed a slight roughness/vibration when letting the clutch out after downshifting from 4th to 3rd.
I checked the shift linkage adjustment and the clutch adjustment free-play, and all is OK. It sounds like the transmission needs to come out for some work, correct? I put a new clutch in about 20 years ago, so I remember how much "fun" that job was.
