68 Power Steering Cylinder Julian Code

    Hello everyone,
I'm going to purchase a Pwr Ster. Cyl. Got an email that at the end of the cyl the code was a 6,then an 8 then a clock . Could this mean the 6th day of 1968 or the 6th month of 1968 . If 6th day of 1968 this would fit right in with the build date. Thanks in advance,Jeff

The date coding on Saginaw products was the date that the product was tested and was ready to ship. The method that Saginaw used to date code their products was as follows:

    XXX Y
Where XXX was the day of the year (000 through 365)
and Y was the last digit of the year (7 for 1967 or 1977)

I can only guess that the assist cylinder that you describe was not a Saginaw manufactured part.

      Jeff,

Just for your reference, here is the date code from my power steering cylinder. "009" and the car was built Jan 31/69. I can't see a fourth number for the year so maybe they didn't all get the year stamped on them.

Thanks Jim and Greg. Jim is there a way to tell if it's a Saginaw piston ?

I am pretty sure that Saginaw stopped making the assist cylinder fairly soon after production of the C3 ended in 1982. I assume that the drawings and some production equipment might have been sold at that time. I have to think that after 25+ years whoever is still making the cylinder is probably doing their own thing with regard to date coding. I would hope that the rest of the cylinder assembly is being manufactured still to the Saginaw drawings.
