    1964 convertible carpet install help?

I am reposting this, since I haven't gotten any responses. I've searched the archives and still have questions. Hopefully, some of you with 64's in the know will help. I am installing Al Knoch carpet on my 64 convertible. My 64 judging manual is on back order, therefore, I can't reference it. Questions:

    1. Does the rear wiring harness run along the top hump of the rear driver's side wheel well or the top of the second hump down? Once glued, does one have to pull carpet up if the wires need to be worked on?

    2. On the rear wheel wells, when the three pieces overlap, do I glue the piece that is on top of another to the piece of carpet under it, or do I just glue each piece to the floor and let the overlapping flap just lay on top of the once below it without glue?

    3. Where the various sections of rear carpet meet the jack storage area, does the carpet stop where the vertical meets the horizontal and the jack cover lays on bare fiberglass horizontal ledge? Or do all sections of carpet extend onto the horizontal ledge and the jack cover board lays on the carpet?

4.. I am especially interested on detailed photos of the following to clear things up:

.......outboard piece in front that goes under sill plate...need a shot of the rear of it where the binding wraps around rear door jam and goes under door sill plate....mine seems to extend too far out away from rear door jam. Should it be backed up against rear door jam and then slightly wrapped around corner where it meets luggage stop?

......carpet cutouts for seat rails, bolt flaps etc.....

......rear wire harness routing before carpet is laid down

......jack board cover section to show whether board lays on carpet or fiberglass

.....front footwells where they meet firewall insulation and also side vents

....close up of rear wheel wells of both front and back edges/bindings etc.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Tiim (50796)

Re: 1964 convertible carpet install help?

Question 1. See the picture. I replaced the original carpet in 1974, and this is how mine was from the factory. This is the only way that I know the wire can go because of the length.

Question 2. I don't have a new carpet set to look at so I'll defer to others.

Question 3. The cars that I have seen have the cover laying on the carpet. I'm too lazy to find my JG and look this up. (At least I did get off my butt and go take a picture for you).

    Quetion 4. See below.

I hope this helps, at least a little.

Hi Tim - away at NCRS event so a little slow,
Your #2, NO glue on any carpet, it will just lay on top

Think I understand the photo you want at rear of door - its the first one. Note later models of C2 (65 on & some later 64's) used a screw to hold the carpet against the side panel. Mine just used glue, Mar64 car. (Carpet is relacement section)

The rear is original carpet. Any difference in black tone is just due to age and sun light.

          Alan,

Thank you very much for your response and help. It really helped to hear answer from my second question....."no glue on any carpet, it just lays on top of other piece". Also, the photos you sent are fantastic. They are my missing link pictures. I didn't have any carpet to copy off of so, as usual, all of you guys are life savers. I have heard from several guys and the info and photos they have sent to me have cleared everything up for me.

          Tim
