Guys, I am preparing to do final assembly on the 265 engine for my '56. I am wondering if the oil pump pick up with screen is the same for the Corvette and the passenger car of that year. Although the oil pans for the '56 Corvette and '56 V-8 passenger cars are shaped quite different, they appear to be about the same depth. One good source I have for this sort of thing says the oil pump pick ups are the same for Corvette and passenger car V-8's. I thought I would see what members of this forum who have more experience than I have to say about this. I appreciate your input. Thanks in advance! Brooks Glover (2141)

Re: '56 Oil Pump Pick Up With Screen
Brooks, oil pump for 55-57 small blocks is a Melling M46 with an IS 46 shaft (6.83 inches long). Don't know about other brands - maybe Joe Lucia or Duke will provide more options. Recall the oil pickup and the shaft is no longer available. P&A says all 55-57 V/8 used the same pickup and screen. Gary....NCRS Texas Chapter

As Roy mentions, the original oil pick-up screens for 1955 and 1956 Corvettes with 265 were the same as 1955-56 passenger car with 265. I believe this is the piece pictured in Roy's photo. This piece, GM #3836982, was discontinued in August, 1957 and replaced by GM #3837159. The latter was discontinued in August, 1960 and replaced by GM #3754942. The latter is configured considerably different than the earlier parts but GM says it will SERVICE 55-57 applications.
GM #3754942 was discontinued within the last several years. However, you can get an identical piece under Sealed Power #224-1146In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

GM says that the 3754942 will work for ALL 1955-57 Corvette V-8 applications. It will also work for all 1955-57 passenger car V-8 applications. This is a NON-ARTICULATING type screen. Apparently, the original 1955-57 pick-up screens were articulating. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
