    1964 Carburetor Date Code

    My May 9th built 1964 300 hp convertible has a carburetor stamped 3E4 3721, and the digits are all in a straight line (not stacked). All the other part numbers seem correct. The JG indicates a two digit date code month/year. Using the E4 as the date code this could indicate a may 1964 carburetor but this is probably just wishful thinking. The digit placement, lack of an S after the 3721, and the three digit date code are telling me this is a service replacement, probably 1974. Any thoughts? Also, if it is a service replacement in perfect condition, any idea of the deduction?

    I have a service replacement AFB on my 63 that I bought in April 1980. It is stamped and tagged (in a double stack) 3721SB and below that E9 (or mfg. in May 1979). I also have a 3720SA parts carb with a stacked date code of K4 (oct. 1964). Most AFB Vette carbs of that era always show at least the "S" after the model number and, if applicable, either an "A" or "B" after that to indicate the update of what usually was the jetting, both fuel and air.

    Your stamping is very unusual.

      Thanks Stuart, I think you're correct - very unusual indeed. I guess it could be a poorly done restamp but I don't think so. Most guys that could restamp to that quality would get the numbers correct as per the JG. When I purchased the car a couple years back the owner handed me the carb and the original air cleaner in a box. He was running a new Carter 625 Perfomer series on the car and claimed that this original carb had been also given to him when he purchased the car 10 years before. I have been doing a full frame-off since I purchased the car and I had Holly's custom shop do the carb so it is perfect. But now that I'm more NCRS educated I'm concerned with it's originality. The truth be told, it's so perfect and runs so good I would probably not change it anyway but I just want to be ready for whatever a judge might say.
