Can any body shed some light? On this 70 roadster i can't get the wipers to function. I have tested or replaced all the components. I can make the cowl raise and lower with direct vac. can make the new wiper motor run if i unplug and then jump it out. new vac relay. new vac can. checked all hoses and connections, tach sol checked out Ok. new vacuum relay. new switch. override checks out also. is their an electrical relay in here that i don't know about. Has any one got any ideas. this is what i get for helping out a friend. LOL Thanks

    Dan,
Trouble shooting the wiper door and wiper system on the 68-72 cars can be very frustrating indeed, although with the proper approach they are not that difficult to diagnose. I would suggest getting a wiring diagram, as well as a vacuum diagram, and taking an organized approach to trouble shooting. Sounds like you may have eliminated many things as the root cause, but you must work your way through the system, one step at a time. The action all starts at the switch (which you say you replaced) making sure you have power in, and out when the switch is turned on. Most of electrical trouble shooting can be done with a standard 12 volt test light, and a vacuum gage would be helpful to you also. Do you have a FACTORY service manual?

Re: losing my mind with these wipers

Dan, I had a similar problem a couple weeks ago and finally found the problem by accident. The connector for the switch that turns on the motor once the wiper door is open (this is the one just to the left of the distributor area) was not making good contact. The plunger looking thingy pushed against the swtich to start the motor. The swtich has a short two wire pig tail that plugs into a smilar looking connector and this is where my problem was. I had turned on the wipers, no go, and for some reason reached down to the connector and moved it, and damn if the wipers didn't start working. Wiggiling the wire up and down would start and stop the wipers. Not sure if this is your problem, but mine turned out to be a bad connection.

I had problems with my 69, bought a diagram for the electric and vacuum. It turned out the hoses on the vacuum canister were reversed. After buying several parts I did not need and hours of frustration I finally got it. It can be very frustrating and then it turns out to be something simple. Good luck! Tom

Dan once you obtain the troubleshooting manual and diagrams. I would recommend working on the vacuum problem first. So that you stay focused on that side of the problem. Then when that system is working properly then go to the electric side. The 2 different system can cause confusion working on both at the same time.

On the vacuum side for the door to open you must bleed vacuum off the control side (small hose) that's what the the solenoid on the back of the Tach or the override are doing. That's when when vacuum is ported to the open side of the door motor. Removing the bleed source makes everything reverse direction.

On the Electric side the problem most times is ground or missing ground. If you are checking power at different connectors and check for power to another ground spot it gives you a false positive. The best way I personally have found is to jumper a known good ground AKA battery negative to all the items in the system switch, motor etc. Then if the system starts to work I remove 1 ground at a time till it stops that indicates where the problem is. Remember there can be more then one bad ground.

Also check the connector at the wiper switch have seen it installed upside down and connected missing one of the pins only 2 connected not all 3.
