    65 Power Buldge

What is the color of the screws that hold the big block hood grill on a 65 396 power bulge.
    Thanks

Chrome-plated Phillips with toothed washers, on my late late L78. I see the '65 TIM&JG allows also for black phosphate recessed hex. with EL headmarks. No headmark on my chrome Phillips.

Since same shields and grilles were used in 1966, I'd be curious to know what the '66 manual says.

Thanks for replying. So are you saying it could be either? I'm not sure what the vin # is on this car.

Yeah, this one's gone both ways over the years, at least on '65 BB's... My car has black, hex head, 'EL' bolts and the 'correct' reproductions from Paragon are head marked 'ELH'.

It appears there ARE some known original cars with silver finished, Philips head screws, out there. But, it's hard to think the two fasteners were binned alike under the same PN... Such would created an assy tool issue for the assy line!

EL hex head 8-32 w/captures star washer. This is interesting I have not seen a phillips head screw that I thought was original I may have to rethink that.
The only other place a similar therad screw would be used is the glove box lock retainer(which happens to be chrome and have a star washer HUMMM...... I wonder if they ran out of the EL bolts and stole the glove bolx lock screws?????? Wayne if you could take a picture of your hood grill screw next to a glove box lock retainer screw it might shead some light on this.

Rich -- here's two pics. larger head with star washer is for the 396 rain shields; has no self-threading cut. The other is from the glove box lock, and is a bit longer. Didn't try to screw the big head screw into glove box cylinder, but it seems larger in diameter, although the thread count/inch is the same. I seem to be missing two of the star washers (note squared ends) and now I'm thinking that maybe that the no-washer screws are meant for the two center positions; ie. the ones that don't hold the shield.

Close but no cigar. Glove box screw is 6-32. There was no other place that used a 8-32 chrome screw like that (I thought the glove box was 8-32). The headlight hardware screws that hold the adjuster in the housings are 8-32 but are cad not crome. Wayne, thanks for taking the time to do this.
