    Hey Ken,

No flapper. I'm using a spacer! Thanks for the suggestion!! All quiet in the manifold area...

I had a similar problem after I rebuilt the engine in my '67 Chevy-II.
I removed the left exhaust manifold, took it to a machine shop and had it
planed. Reassembled and ticking was gone. Ticking was prominent with
increased exhaust pressure, but not evident when car was coasting.

I used to misdiagnose ticking problems by thinking that it could be lifters,
but now I always check for exhaust leaks first. Easier to deal with.

I have a mysterious and very prominent ticking noise noticeable from inside my '69 390HP Coupe (almost non-detectable from outside the car). It seems the sound is most prevalent from just behind the passenger seat. The sound increases or decreases with engine RPM and is only present while the engine is running (the sound can't be duplicated while coasting with the engine off). It also seems to subside once the car reaches full operating temperature. My best guess is I may have an exhaust leak where the pipes join at the front exhaust hanger. The pipe joints are compressed by a single clamp that acts as a hanger as well. Since this clamp loops over the hanger, could this be creating a poor seal that would produce a very noticeable ticking audible from inside the vehicle but virtually undetectable from outside the car? Is this something that could be addressed without pulling the pipes apart?

Could the noise be something other than an exhaust leak? Am I chasing my tail here?

Thanks in advance for your comments / suggestions!

        Regards,
        Vince
At that pipe junction at the rear of the transmission the AIM calls for a small amount of exhaust system sealer. The only place I have seen this recently is from a company called Wurth. it is a German company I believe.

I have no experience with this supplier. I post this just so you can see the product.

Re: Help With Source Of Ticking Noise

          All,

Thank you all for responding and offering suggestions! Your thoughts were extremely valuable. After several cups of coffee and a clear mind I crawled under the car last Saturday morning. Per Mr. Koehler's suggestion, I turned my focus to the ground straps. The ground strap on the passenger side had broken at the connector. This in itself did not cause the noise. The screw had also worked its way loose. Since the connector portion of the strap was still on the screw, it was causing the ticking noise only while the motor was running due to the vibration (moving back and forth striking the frame). Mystery solved!! Hard to believe something so trivial would cause such consternation. All is well with the world (again)!!

          Best Regards,
          Vince
