Re: '66 valve cover casting flaw - judging

I have owned 1966 #11457 since 1967, and both valve covers do not have the casting flaw. Hope this helps.

I know what the JG states "appears at approximately VIN 17,000 (march 1966)". I have been watching other cars on auctions & other web sales and have seen a few others aroud my VIN that have the flaw. My question is...how close to VIN 17,000 is "approximately" ? I am preparing for regionals and want to determine how many other "66 cars that are known to be original have the flaw and are prior to VIN 17,000. Thanks, Dan
My car is very close in production to yours....14648 and also has the flaw. I lost 2 pts in 2007. I believe them to be original to the car but can't be 100% certain.

If I were judging an early car with the casting flaw, I would look not only at the VIN of the car, but also at the appearance of the flaw, as it was very light early on and became progressively more distinct as time went on. Without seeing your car, it's not possible to make a hard and fast decision.

My Dec. 1965 build L79 #107706 has the casting flaw on both valve covers. It too is original and I had no deduct the last time it was judged. But that was before the new rewrite of the '66 judging manual.
