    Camp Lejeune

My son is stationed in jacksonville North Carolina and is having fuel delivery problems with his 1997 75K mile Z 28. has had it into a shop a few times and the problem still exists. He seems to be getting a run around. The Camp, as big as it is has no place for the Marines to work on their own cars so they are at the mercy of the local tallent. Can anyone recomend a reputable shop?
    Thanks

I do not know if a pressure test has been done. The problem started around 3 mos would not start i told him to change the fuel filter and started right up. a month later same problem and i told him he had better get the pump changed. He was away for a month and no start waited a while and she started he says he hears the pump running but i am not so sure. he is 20 and impatient.

Hi Bill, Can't answer your question.
My son John Thomas is a Parris Island, SC. He is in Company C 1st Recruit Training Battalion hoping to become a Marine. My kid is 21.
I write to him everyday as we have zero communication until he graduates. His graduation is the same time as the NCRS national in July.

The ethanol is starting to kill the fuel pumps as well as everything else. JD

          Hi Bill,

Sorry I can't contribute to the issue here, but wanted you to know that Camp Lejeune does have an auto hobby shop for Servicemen to work on their vehicles. I have used these before and they are very well equipped

All the best to your son. Semper Fidelis.

              Hi Bill,
I'm leaning towards a faulty fuel pump. A line pressure test should reveal this.
Back in the last century when I was in the Corps, every base I went to had a hobby area and tools to use for working on our cars. We also did a lot right outside our barracks as well.

Bill, its a tuff to call the problems on line, but i can give your son a few things that should be checked, The first is that Chevy uses a pass key operation, that has a chip on the key that if the body control module doesn't since correctly,( reading the chip) It will disable the fuel pump. to correcly dia. this problem a scan tool would help make it easier, as cars do get older the wires that are internal in the column do tend to break from the constant turning of the key on and off. and can be a case of intermitent conection.

The fuel pump it self generally does not have intermittent running problems, its generally the electrical system that runs it.the system runs through a relay, and body control module ( Uses key chip to activate the ground path to relay). power is fused at fuse block for pump and ground connection. for the pump and relay

If by chance there is a remote starter installed in car I have seen many problems with the wires to pass key system,( They are tapped into, To permit the car to start without the key in ignition) they should be sodiered connections at that point, the slightest change in resistance wil cause a no start condition.

Hi Bill, Thanks for the good info. My son left here around April 17th. He was allowed to bring 20 of $1 bills and the clothes on his back. So by this time he is definitely broke. I will send him stamps and envelops immediately.
Where did you stay when you went to the graduation? Thanks very much, John

We stayed in Beuford about 10 mins from the island. We do not remember the name of the hotel there are about 10 of them in that area. We were there in November and it was plenty hot. Good luck keep in touch. man is he going to have some stories for you.

                      Bill,

I have several contacts who live and work in Jacksonville, including the old repair shop of an engine builder that I've done some work for. As you know, it's much cheaper for him if he can work on it himself. If he gets frustrated and wants to pay someone, send me an e-mail or a PM and I'll get the names of some reputable shops there in Town.
