    1954 Horns

I'm a little confused (most of the time, I might add). I'm taking my '54 apart and finally got a look at the horns. The numbers are 681 and 682. The fifth edition judging guide says they are supposed to be 687 and 688. Ron Goralski's site says 681 and 682's are for the '53's which may mean they are 6 volt, but the judging guide says '53 horns are 631 and 632. Jay sells 681 and 682's as original for the '54.

Just curious, are the 681 and 682's good to go in a '54? If they are not the right horns for the '54 what were they intended for?

    Thanks!

I'm not sure about the horn numbers , but 681 and 682 may be Car horns , Jay half of the time doesn't know what he's selling . Car horns will fit Corvette brackets , because car brackets are different then Corvette. I would go by the JM #'S .

      Randy-

I wondered the same thing when I did a frame on restore job on my 42k original mile 1954. My horns were 681 and 682. I am 99% sure they were original to the car. I would keep the horns you have.

        Russ:

I'm about 88% confident that these horns have never been removed from the car. And mine is a late VIN, #4400. Like yours, I can't imagine that someone would go through the trouble of tossing the right horns to replace them with the wrong ones.

        Thanks!

Regarding APPEARANCE, the 53-54 pass car horns LOOK the same as 53-56 Vette horns. Of course, 53-54 horns (pass car and Vette) ARE 6v. Once installed and with the grille installed, they are virtually impossible to see or identify.
Personally, I have a set of 54 pass car (6v) horns on the 56 Vette. TRUST ME, when I hit the horn button, it gets peoples' attention! I love it!

Same goes for my 51 Chevy. It still has its original 6v horns and I converted to car to 12v back in 67. When I hit the horn button, they know I'm there!

My 1953 #245 had original 681, 682 horns. Your 54 is most likely an early 54???? The numbers cannot be seen for judging anyway.

3,640 cars were made in 1954. Ours was near the end of production (3,400th car, VIN 4400).
