64 Rear Parking Brakes Cables - Tried the Search

Doesn't seem to have any useable info in the search. But I'm trying to get my parking brake cables correct. At the moment, I've got a single cable on the left side and a single length of cable on the right side that has been extended. This extension is needed to centralise the cable due to the offset of the lever connectiong to the front cable.

The AM showes a short 'connector' on the left side. Paragon list their Rh cable as 43 9/16" long and Lh as 40" long, no mention of how long the 'connector' is. Other venders list 'pairs' of cables but no length given. Something just doesn't seem right to get the cables equalised with the vendors offerings.

I'm thinking I only need one cable but could someone list the lengths and GM part numbers of both sides plus some info about that short connector? I live in Oz, so I just want to order the correct parts to avoid returning incorrect parts.

    Bud.

Hi Bud, I bought a pair on Ebay which are excellent, listed as NOS but are new from old MFR I believe, They're $80 for the pair, the newer NOS ones arn't correct, just later replacements, found out the hard way! Search and you may find them again, they are newly made but nice!

Here's pics of original (Jan '64) trailing arm assemblies with parking brake cables and connector detail. You can see that the longer cable (passenger side) has a kink in it near the end, just at the start of the cable bend towards the ball. This kink is where the centering slider was from the rod and arm.

Great photos Wayne, Thanks! Now, do you have a photo of that short extension that goes between the connector and centering slider? Does anyone know what that little sucker is for? Does it have some adjustment to it??

See if the picture will help. All original parking brake cables (tires are my street ones just do not like those thin HP stock tires)
Have other pictures so if needed more just direct me to location.

Best bet is to down load and zoom in for details

            Hi Alan,

Something is wrong here, there's no dirt on the underside of your car!

Do you have a close-up photo of the short cable on the left side?

Do you know why it is there?

            Bud

Bud -- I see no short cable in Alan's photo. The long(er) cable from the passenger side trailing arm passes through the equalizer/slider/centering bracket that's threaded to the rod, then continues for another few inches where its ball is hooked into the connector. Then, to the driver side of the connector hooks the ball from the driver side cable to the LH trailing arm. No short cables anywhere; only the necessarily different cable lengths from the trailing arms to permit the above set-up.

I don't have a '64 AIM, but my '65 has a page for the J61 drum brake (credit) option, and this detail shows.

                WHAT THE HECK!!!!!!

When I got my car, it had two 40 inch cables. The ball ends fitted nicely into the equaliser (tho this made the whole thing off centered). It had no connector. When you look at the AIM, it appears that this is indeed what is required except that there is also an extension - short cable used to equalise the lengths of the two different lengths of cable. It's wasn't clear to me (the dunce of the class) that the longer cable passed through the equaliser and connected to the other cable. So I set about looking for a supplier to get me one of those little cables. Gezzzzzz

Now everything is crystal clear. Thanks for showing me the light! I've gotta run now to cancel my order for short cables!

NOTE: A true friend wouldn't go passin' this story about. He'd be understanding and concerned about others' reputation/feelin's.....

                Red-faced Bud.
