    torque spec

My friend called asking me for the torque spec for the dust shields bolts for the front brakes. There are 3 bolts which hold the dust shield in place; he could not find the specs in his AIM and asked me to look in mine. I have not found it either, does this fall under a one torque fits all, if so what is that?

    Thanks

    Todd

    Re: torque spec

Looking in a couple different AIM's it appears that the front hubs were supplied to the plant as an assembly with the dust shields, and spindle attached. This is why there is no spec given for them in the AIM books. If no one else jumps in I will see what I can find in the service manual.

The top bolt is called out in the Chassis Service Manual as the "anchor bolt - disc brakes", at 75 ft-lbs. The bottom two bolts also attach the steering arm, and they're called out at 65-85 ft-lbs.

You don't mention the year of the car. It makes a difference for these bolts. 1965-67 are somewhat different than 68-82.

The brake anchor bolt (the large 11/16-16 X 7/8" bolt which also retains the rotor backing plates) is spec'd at 120 lb/ft. I'm surprised that the earlier 65-67 was spec'd at the 75 lb/ft that John mentioned because I believe this bolt was the same for 65-67 as for 68-82.

The steering arm bolts (which also retain the rotor backing plates) were different for 1965-67 than for 1968-82. The 65-67 bolts were 7/16-20 size whereas the 1968-82 were 1/2-20 size. I have looked for years, high-and-low and in every source I could find and have never found a GM spec for these 68-82 bolts. So, I use 95-100 lb/ft which is the "standard" toque range for this size bolt.

Thanks for the help guys, and I apologize for not referencing the year; it is a 72 he is working on. When I could not find it in my AIM, it really intrigued me.
