    1970 SS454 Chevelle Off Topic?

OK, I know it is not technical or Corvette. I was hoping someone on here is a 1970 SS454 Chevelle person. I have found a One-Owner 1970 SS454 Chevelle, 90000 miles, No A/C, supposedly original motor, Blackcherry/Black, 4-speed with a BENCH seat, Protectoplate and bill of sale. Rust?? I hope to look at it tomorrow. It does run, but has not been on the road for about 20 years. What is this car worth? Any pricing help is appreciated. Please feel free to email me with experienced suggestions/advice on pricing of this car. I feel anywhere from $5000-$20,000, depending on how correct and sound this car is. Am I wrong?
    Thanks DG

Assuming this is a hardtop and not a convertible? Looking at 2007 NADA price guide (this is the latest I have), hardtop goes for$18.6K on the low side up to $77.5K on the high end. Add, between $1000 to $1600 for 4 speed, $200-$800 for cowl induction, 10% for factory A/C, with a 5% deduct for the bench seat. Of course if it is rusty and or not running it would be considerably less. Your considerably low on your estimate and I think I would jump on it if it is available for the prices you quoted. If your not interested-let me know.

Ck the Vin that is 13680 BUTT... not always a tell tale sign of a true SS 454 or SS 396 Chevelle in 1970. But does need to start with those numbers intially. Seeing it has Paper, POP and Bill of Sale. Most likely safe and good price if not a rust bucket. Ck 3/8 lines etc. 12 bolt 3 cir-pod gauges on drivers dash. Seen some people try to pawn off fake SS in 70 with just the 13680 Vin to verify.

1968 was the last year to tell by the 138 vin as a real ss car.

            Dick,

I had a 71 SS-454 (red w/black stripes) for many years. I saved it from the junk yard. I saw it on the back of a flat bed. Offered the guy $200 and he delivered it to my garage. The engine was in pieces in the trunk, but it was all there. By the time I was done the restoration, the only original sheet metal left on the car was the roof and the passenger side door skin. Lucky for me this was back in the mid 80's and most all of the parts were still available through GM.

These cars were rust buckets. The bottom of the front fenders, the bottom of the rear quarters and also the top of the quarters just above the bumper were common rust areas. If the car has a vinyl top, then most likely the rear window surround will have issues also.

This site has a bunch of good info on id'ing a real SS.

My car, before and after (ignore the cinder block supports.... I'm much smarter now..........)

my 70 454 450HP chevelle is about 15 miles from my house with less than 9000 original miles. i gave the latest owner #3 all the paper work. my was not a SS but built as a std chevelle with a bench seat,THM400 and 4.10 rear gear. i also gave him all the original smog pump stuff and exhaust manifolds as it still had the headers i had put on the car when it was new.

Sold my 70 SS454 LS6 years ago. Forest green, black vinyl top, cowl hood w/white stripes, black interior with a bench seat, AM/8 track in dash player, M-22 and a 4.10 12 bolt. It had 10K miles and I got $2000 for it. Sure wish I had it back.

First. Thanks to all on your help. It is a hardtop. In the picture I have, one of the bias ply tires is flat. Looks like either mud or rust on bottom edge of rear quarter behind rear wheel. The body has sagged down, maybe wore out the springs? I did ask the original owner's wife if it had A/C, No. I asked if it had the original factory engine and she said yes. I will determine that tomorrow. Cowl hood: Yes. Do these cars have a build sheet hidden somewhere? The daughter told me today it has been stored for about 20 years and started every couple of years. It is running now. I wish it had buckets with center console. What should the paint code be for Blackcherry? Black interior? I don't have any Chevelle books. Engine casting number if it is the 454/360HP version.
                  Thanks

78 will be the color code if it is a true black cherry car. As the others have mentioned, documentation is the ONLY way to verify a true SS in 1970. If this is truly a one owner LS6, you need to make sure you buy it. Even in rotten shape the car is very valuable. Especially if it has documentation. If you get stumped on this one, send me a PM any time and I will help you determine what you have. I can also put you in touch with the best Chevelle guys on earth. If it's real, don't let it get away. I'm a long time ACES member as well as a long time member of Team Chevelle. I'll be glad to help.

These cars did have build sheets, but not all. They can be found in the headliners, under the carpet, in the fenders, under the rear seat, etc. It varies by plant. My Arlington built 70 Chevelle had no sign of a sheet. My 69 Kansas car had one in the front fender. I have also found sheets in the front seat springs.

Bought my 67 SS 396 13867 Ragtop from org. Owner. Found Build sheet 3 mos later in the back seat. Drivers side far rear corner. In 67 hard to fake look like an IBM punch card. The 70's Do have build sheets. Look under the dash and behind rear seats as well.

Car has 3.31 posi, instrument package, LS5 454 original motor, runs. Will look at tomorrow. Original paint? This car has not been on the road for about 20-25 years. I got the info from the protectoplate today. The first letter of the suffix code is excluded. It reads RT not CRT like the code shown in my sources say. The VIN on protectoplate begins136370K2xxxxx.
                        What's she worth?
                        Thanks

I'd venture to say if its a No.4 condition car. $13-17K Taking into account pnt redo plus other needs. Tough to say without seeing it. The Pluses paper, engine, rear combo. Bench a minus. BUT back in the day bench was preferred for the true street racer. NO ps, pb, air etc. Clean NO Serious Rot. $13-17K you should be ok. Course you may ask price. She could say "As much as I can get" . Whole new world. 70 ss is very desirable.

Owned a '70 LS-6 Convertible, Sept '69 production. My good friend at that time had an LS-6 hardtop. 12 bolt rear end will have a portion of the VIN. Lower control arms will have oval shaped rubber bushings. Big block cars had a master cylinder that was flatter and wider than SB cars. 4 core radiator. Dittos on all the rust areas Thomas Hoyer refers to.

                              I have pricing info on two LS6 cars (not an LS5 that you are looking at);
I bought mine (Black / Black) in July 2007 for $82K, My brother bought his (Black Cherry / Black) restored car in July 2009 for $70K. Both 4 speed with console. My estimate would be $35 ~ $ 40K for what you are looking at. Hope this help's
