    1972 Frame Stencil

Were there two locations used for the frame stencil in 1972? If yes were was the second location and when did it start?

No one in our NCRS community has any knowledge or opinon on where the frame stencil was in 1972. I have seen several recent applactions of the stencil behind the right front wheel. Is this something I have missed through the years, new information or just plain wrong.

      Ed,

The stencil on the LT1 is just behind the right wheel on the upward sloping frame rail. On the 71 the numbers are along the side frame rail, near the rear right wheel. Are you finding a stencil located elsewhere?

        Kevin,
The stencil on my 72 was gone along time ago, so I dont know where it was originaly. I was interested in knowing when they changed from the location by the passenger door to behind the right front wheel.

          Hi Ed,
The frame stencil on my mid-January buit 71, #6589, was located below the right-side door. The stencil is up-side down when the car is viewed normally.
          Regards,
          Alan

The stencil on my 74 was right behind right front tire.

              Ed,
I can't answer when the location change was made but on the LT1, most of the numbers are hidden behind the small rubber seal. You might try lifting the seal just a bit? Sometimes a wipe with light oil will bring the numbers up again. Let's hear from some early 72 owners!

                  Kevin,
I removed the splash pan and there were some faint white numbers. They were not clear enough to tell much. I was always looking in the wrong place. I wonder why after all the years of GM marking the frame om the side rail they changed the location?

                      Ed -

Probably related to the manufacturing location and the method of shipment. Midyear frames were made by A.O. Smith across the river from the plant, in Granite City, Illinois, and shipped on open flatbed trucks. C3 frames were made by the A.O. Smith plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and shipped by rail on open flatcars.

Thanks for all the information. I quess it is never to late to learn something. After owning a car for 38 years there is still something I did not know.

I've got an early build '72 LT-1 with A/C - Feb. 8, 1972. I'll get under there with a can of Gumout this weekend and see what I can find. A few years ago I bought a 78 Pace Car right out of the original dealers showroom, with only 63 miles on the odometer. Every chalk mark, hand number, and frame stencil was like it was made yesterday. It had the stencil on the right inside frame rail, upside down.

My December 14, 1970 base engine coupe is stamped as shown in the picture below. It's pretty much below the middle of the driver side door.
