    Oil Pan gasket install - Fel-Pro OS-30061T

Unfortunately while starting the process of changing my valve seals I made the job much bigger than it had to be. I remembered to pull the wire off of the coil at the last second, but not before I plugged all of the holes down to the lifter valley. One of the wing nuts from my ignition shielding slipped out of my hand and now I am changing the oil pan gasket. The wing nut was sitting on top of the pan baffle. At least I found it.

I am using a one-piece Fel-Pro OS-30061 gasket and Permatex Copper sealant. I need some quick input as to how much sealant to apply and where to apply it. I assume I should put the gasket on the pan first, is that right? I will clean everything up and make sure the surface of the pan is true. A quick blow by blow on the basics would be much appreciated. Maybe I can get to those seals tomorrow!

Larry, all you will need to do is put a dab in the 4 cornors of the gasket,(rear main cap and timing cover cornors) The one piece gasket are basicly to be put on dry.

That is what the directions say, I just wanted to be sure no one here knew better.

      Thanks,

      Larry

a little orange paint may hide it.

            Larry,
I installed one of these gaskets on my '65 last year. The installation seemed much easier than the original 3 piece gasket set that I had installed on an old Chevy many years ago. The gasket should have come with 4 plastic threaded pins that hold and align the gasket to the block. The pan then slips over the pins (compressing the spring clips on the side of the pin. Start threading all but the four bolts where pins are located, remove the pins, replace them with four bolts and you're all set. I used the sealant at the points noted in the directions but probably should have been more generous with it. I have noticed a little oil at the top back of the pan but not enough the warrant changing it again.

I was concerned about the visibility of the blue gasket and sprayed the edge orange before installation. The trouble is that paint adherence to the gasket material is a problem. Some of it flaked during installation and I had to touch it up. Maybe there is some specific surface prep that could be done to the gasket before painting.

            Good Luck,

            Dave Brown
