Check out the vin tag on this 64 coupe!

Check out the vin tag on item # 170475224992 ! It must have been installed by Mickey Mouse. I tried to paste it over here but didn't have any luck. Take a look and see what you think! Tom

Thanks Harry! Does anyone know this outfit? I would be very careful with them, I think something is rotten and it ain't in Denmark!

Maybe I'm missing something here but I thought those '64 VIN tags were spot welded, like in the photo.

It looks like every 64 tag I've ever seen. Nothing wrong with that one.

I have no problem with the welds, but wasn't there usually a space on either side of the "S", not just one side ? I'm not saying it's not factory correct, just that it's not typical (caveat -- I'm a '65 person ).

Typically, there was a space on either side of the "S" but at the start of the year, there were none. My bet is that during the changeover, there was a space on only one side.

                I'm a '65 person too.

O.K if ya'll say so. But that weld on the right side sure looks strange to me! Tom

I've seen them with 4 spot welds that looked like the welder was set for 1/2" plate steel and burned holes in the tag. Must be why they went to rivets.

the spot weld on the pass side of the vin tag is a tad nasty but i'd accept it as a factory weld. the Z-bar its welded to looks unmolested. owner of the dealership is Dave Stull(unsure of spelling). he's been dealing in vettes for years. some of the vettes are real nice, some not. i've found him to be honest. mike

I would geuss that is why they went to rivits. The weld job was sure un -professional looking. It is almost hard to believe a big company like G.M. could put out something so crude! Tom

Tom -- probably one of the reasons they went to rivets in the '65 MY was that too many of the VIN plates "were being broken loose from the body during the "date of vehicle delivery" stamping operation performed in the dealerships ... caused by striking the die excessively hard in an attempt to make a legible impression with one hammer blow" [quote from Chevrolet Service News, Aug 1965]. Goes on to recommend a series of light taps with a 1/8" die, while rocking the die slightly to get an imprint.
