    C1 wheel cover drawing

Took a picture with my camera of the drawing.

Anybody have a recommendation how I should convert all my drawings to jpeg? I am in Detroit area.

On my `62. 3 of the 4 had the Pat Pending #. Don't know why the 4th didn't. Looked original.

They been making repro's for some years now so it could be a repro. I dont remember ever seeing a original one with out the pat pending but who knows

Noland has about 3500 GM drawings that I digitized. For the obvious reasons, I spent some time thinking about how to digitize these drawings before I started the project.

Based on my experience, you have three options:

          1. You can find a local copy or blueprint shop that has a large format scanner. I assume your diagrams are 24" x 33". The commercial large format scanners can handle this size with a problem. I don't recall the pricing - maybe something like $2 or $3 per scan. Call around, because prices vary a lot. Quantity discounts will lower the price significantly. You want them to scan in uncompressed tiff mode. Since Noland has 3500 diagrams, this option was way too expensive, even with the very significant quantity discounts that I was quoted.

          2. You can rent a large format scanner for about $350 per month. I thought about this, but this option was too expensive as well, since I needed to scan Noland's diagrams over time.

          3. I ended just finding a flat wall at my house, created a cork backboard on the flat wall, and then pinned each diagram to the wall. I have a very high quality 10.1MP digital camera with a GREAT professional lens. I put the camera on a tripod, and snapped a picture of each GM Diagram in uncompressed RAW mode. Not quite the same quality as with a scanner, but the results were for the most part excellent.

Take a look... Noland's GM Diagrams

The pics on the webpage are scaled down of course. after cropping, the GM Diagrams are about 3200 x 2400 in size, which is pretty big. Each RAW file is about 20MB. I used Adobe Lightroom software to adjust and edit the digitized diagrams (and convert them to jpeg).

My advice - if you don't have many diagrams, call the local copy shops, negotiate the best price for the # of diagrams you have, and let them scan the diagrams on a large format scanner. If you have a lot of diagrams, either rent a large format scanner or you can follow my DIY approach - but you need a pro or prosumer camera to make the DIY approach work.

          Hope this helps,

          Russ
