Is the correct color code for the 1974 block, valve covers, intake maniford, & oil pan Chevy Orange-Red (Dupli-Color DE 1607) or Chevy Orange (Dupli-Color DE 1620). My original valve covers and intake appear to be original in color which match Chevy Orange Red. Which is the correct color to use for NCRS judging?

My GUESS would be that the 1620 is going to be the closest. My advice to you, though, is this: spay a test panel with both of the paints you described (yes, buy a can of both; they don't cost that much). Or, if you wish, just get the 1620 and try that. Use an approximate 3" X 3" pieces of sheet metal to spray the test panels. After they're dry, compare them to the color on the original-painted pieces of the engine. Of course, the engine paint will have changed color somewhat over the years due to heat and age, but it's the best evidence you've got for the original color shade. If you only buy the 1620 and it's close enough for you, then you're done. If not, then try the 1607.
You might not like the match of either. In that case, obtain some other brands of "Chevy Orange", spray test panels and compare until you're satisfied. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Keep in mind that the colour that GM used at the engine plants did not remain constant thoughout the years- there's minor variations (major to some eyes) in the exact shade of orange.
Trying to find the exact match today is a bit of hit or miss.- Top
