    1972 tank sticker

I have a tank sticker from a 1972 Corvette coupe. The VIN, which is typed on as a carbon copy in reverse, is difficult to read.

I thought it said 23800, making the VIN 1Z37K2S523800. I just got off of the phone with the owner of 23800, and his car doesn't seem to match the description, particularly with regard to exterior and interior colors.

It is possible that the 8 is actually a 2, which would make the VIN 1Z37K2S523200. Also, the number 200 is written on the tank sticker in pencil. I assume that this is the job number.

So, three questions...1) Is the 200 written on the tank sticker the job number or the last 3 digits of the VIN?, 2) How common is it for the job number and the VIN to match like this?, and 3) car 23200, where are you?

Last known location was Massachusetts, probably 12-15 years ago.

I will gladly send this tank sticker to the owner of the car that it matches.

    Ed,
I would say that 8 could be a 2, 5, or a 6. I recently removed a tank sticker recently that at first look with my old eyes I thought I was seeing an 8, or maybe a 6, but when I checked the options list in the spec guide it could only have been a 5. I had to use my opti-visor to see this better. My guess is that the hand written number could be the job number and it would NOT be at all common for it to match the VIN, but not impossible. Cannot help with location of car.

      Ed -

Are the numbers separated, like "23 200"? That's commonly seen on some midyear tank stickers, and that identifies the car as Schedule #23, body #200, where "200" is the Body Shop Job Number.

No, the numbers are all together, typed one after another with no spaces.

These are the reverse numbers that you find on some (late?) 72 tank stickers, that are the last 5 digits of the VIN.

My 69 & 70 have the hand written numbers on the tank stickers that match the last 3 numbers of the VIN

I just queried the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System and got the following info:

            State: Georgia
            VIN: 1Z37K2S523200
            Issue Date: 12/27/2005
            Odometer: Unknown

Any idea how to do a vehicle check in Georgia?

OK, I just filled out the paperwork to do a title search in Georgia. They may not provide the current owner info given the privacy laws, but I requested that they forward my contact info to the current owner.

I hope this works out and I can re-unite the paperwork with the car. I have $9.95 invested in this effort so far.
