    1956 Sr-1

Two pictures of 1956 #2834 in January 1957 on its way from South Dakota to Los Angeles. Car had already been repainted a non-Corvette red and was looking forward to a lot of drag strip and dry lakes action. Was also shown in a photo and mentioned in October 1957 Hot Rod Magazine.

      Re: 1956 Sr-1

What John does not mention is that the Hot Rod pictorial involved a bunch of state-of-the-art drag race cars from SoCal that were taken to Hawaii as a quasi-demonstration. Bruce Geisler owned the car at that time and, depending on rear gears, ran the Drags and the Dry lakes with equal success. In some cases, a '56 that gave '57s "morning sickness".

Thanks for the great pictures John! 'Looks like it still has the 170's mounted?!

IIRC either in Vette Vues or the '53-'55 club mag. a bank in Chicago had an SR-1 or SR-II for sale decades ago. Anyknow know which car that was?

SR-1 represents the first St Louis Corvettes produced with race options. Represented part of Ed Coles and groups program to save the Corvette thru performance. There is a great article by Dick Robinson and edited by Vinny Peters in a early 2009 Restorer

I believe that the Firestone Super Sports 670:15s which were on the car when it left the factory, were used at El Mirage and at many drag strips. I do not know how many that the car used. According to some racers of that era the tires were very hard and were probably made to stand up to long races on concrete runways. Sebring Bill may know which car was in that add.

                  New 56 Sr-1 Photos

Two new race pictures of a SR-1 John.

Walter Miller photos found last night. Taken at THOMPSON RACEWAY, CONN.

Does anyone know who was the driver of this car? Looks like the same car with #15 and #3 race numbers. Note the red insert on the white body and 'gold' Halibrand wheels.

He also has one of the E.B. Rose black / rose cove and rose hardtop at the same track.

By memory. GM under a Engineering order repainted the stripes and cove gold on either the Sebring car #5 or#6. Stated reason was to make it appear that there were more cars racing. This car was on the cover of a 1959 car magazine. Driver, Dick Perrin? Can you tell the color combination of the right fender lights? Was this photo from 1956? Good to hear from you. Will you be at Watkins Glen this weekend?

It's on the cover of March 1959 Sports Car Illustrated and is identified as a 283-powered 1957 Corvette! Both of the fender lights appear to be amber.

My PC is down John, so working on my laptop. I am talking to Miller today. He was excited about the Eb Rose 57. Date I think was 1959. No WG for me. Too far for these old bones.

I have only seen that color combination in 1956 race(s). Does not mean that it was not raced later. How about Dick Jalbart(sp) as a later owner with a repaint to white blue?
