    Late 66 Speedo cable routing

I am cleaning up my firewall and getting ready to reinstall my instrument cluster and was looking at the 66 assembly manual, UPC-12, C-3 and it shows the speedometer cable coming through the firewall just above and inboard of the clutch rod.
My speedo cable comes through the firewall with the tachometer cable next to the wiper motor. I am thinking one of two things, one there was a change sometime in the model year or my car has been wrong for close to fifteen years. My firewall has a factory plug in the hole next to the clutch rod , but there is a corresponding hole in the new firewall insulation (re-pop black heat shield on interior side). This a June 22 nd car.
    Thanks for any input guys,
    Pete

Pete --- if the '66 is like the '65, the section UPC 12 is the BASE configuration, ie. 3-speed transmission, and speedo cable connects on the driver side, like Powerglides. Look in the UPC M 21 section for proper routing [that is, if you have a 4-sp].

You hit right on the head Wayne. UPC-12, C-3 didn't say anything about what speed transmission but it does show a clutch rod. I use a CD copy of the AIM and my search techniques don't seem to yield the most through results. But I found it where you said it was.
      Thanks,
      Pete

        Pete -

The Assembly Manual is set up so everything in the UPC1 through UPC14 portion of the manual relates only to the "base car" (a car ordered with no options), with only standard equipment. The 3-speed manual transmission was standard equipment (until 1970), so that's what's shown. Anything that was an extra-cost option is shown in the RPO section of the manual.

I have a late 66 L79 4 speed, cable come up on passenger side, goes though firewall grommet with tach cable in the indented section on firewall. Owned car for last 40 years.

Thanks again John, I never knew that, I knew that the options were in the back but I never actually understood the UPC/base relationship until now.

Mine does the same Jack, I just looked at the wrong page in the AIM.
              Thanks,

                Pete,
How long is your speedometer cable?

Re: Late 66 Speedo cable routing

That was one of the things I was pondering when Wayne and John pulled me back to earth. I looked at the cable and knew there was no way it would reach going across the rest of the firewall. Having never known there was a difference between three speed and four speed Corvette speedo cable hook- ups I thought I had another late build issue or a Bubba did in the past issue (which I thought very unlikely). I knew the diagram in the AIM showed a car with a clutch so I thought I better check here and as usual the learned members came through again.
