    Tire pressures?

    Hi corvette friends
    It's about my C1, 1959, B.F.Goodrich Silvertown 6,70 x 15 4Ply.
The Operations Manual says about normal Operation 24 pounds in pressure and my question is "how much is that in Psi or Bar?

I hope someone can help me today because the sun are shinning even though the volcanic eruption ashes from Iceland are in the air

    Regards Jorn/Denmark

    Re: Tire pressures?

24 lbs converts directly to 24 psi
    24 lbs converts to .0689 x 24 = 1.65 bars

24 psi=1.655 bar. That sounds a little low. Does the "operations manual" specifically reference the tires that you are using?

Is there Maximum Cold Tire Pressure on the side wall? General rule of thumb for street use is to set the pressures a few pounds below that rating.

        Thanks Jim
I have come to the same answer myself ,but think the tire looks "flat" with that pressure!Maybe I have to use another "pressure Gun"

I would run about 30psi. if it were mine. Tom

            Hi Paul
            It's says in Op.Manual:
            Pressures (cold):
Normal Operation.........24 Pounds front and rear.
            Sustained High Speed
            Operation...................36 Pounds front and rear.
And it's for this type of tires I use.
On my Tires stand: Max load 1450 LBS AT 32 Psi Max Press.

              Hi Tom
I would try 30 Psi, it's the same as Paul says with his general thumb rule " a few pound below max.pressure.

                Jorn,

I think the 24 lbs spec for tires in the manual is for the most comfortable ride.

                  Jorn;

That's very interesting that the manual says to over inflate the tires for high speed operation. It's an old road racer's trick to over inflate the tires. We used to do it for autocross and gymkhanas.

                    Re: Tire pressures?

All modern tires including bias ply have a maximum load/cold pressure placard molded into the sidewall, and what you have is probably 32 psi, but look at the sidewall.

Moder low or no speed rating radials are usually placarded at 35 psi. High speed rated radials are usually up to 44 psi, but some large wheel diameter tires are up to 51 psi. And, remember, these are COLD maximum pressures. Typical highway cruising will increase pressure by 4-6 psi, and running hot laps on a racetrack will increase pressures 10-12 psi.

Higher pressure up the limit improves handling, fuel economy, and tire life but increases ride harshness. Back when my SWC was new I ran the OE General Jet Aires at 35 psi, but they had no pressure/load placard.

My recommendation is to run the pressure as high as you can stand up to the maximum.

Pressure by definition is FORCE PER UNIT AREA, so "pounds" is a misnomer and usually means pounds per square inch or shorthand psi.

                    1 Bar = 14.5 psi

                    Duke

                      Hi Duke
My Tires are "diagonal" tires! I have try to drive with 30 Psi today and that was very "comfortable" and the car was very easy to handle.
Before I drive with 36-37 Psi and the car was very hard and difficult to handle. But there must be several on this Forum who use these "original" tires and have some experience with the pressure.

                      Regards Jorn

                        Re: Tire pressures?

I run my tires between 30 and 35 psi. Keep track of the tire wear. If they wear in the middle, decrease the pressure. If they wear on the edges, increase the pressure or go slower around corners. All of my tires are radials, but this should apply to bias (diagonal) ply tires as well.

ps: Check that air cleaner often, volcanic ash cannot be good for an engine.

if the car sits for long periods of time pump them up. run them hihg to help prevent flat spots. let it out when you drive it.
