Master Cylinder ID - C1 (check out pics)

Gents- I have a late model 59 and I'm trying to determine if the Master Cylinder is original. I know the book says 5454480 but I'm having a hard time believing it or I'm in denial. What do you think? Is this original to a 59 with a birthday of June 28th, 1960?

    TIA - John

I think they had the large 022 master cylinder with the plug in the front. Others will chime in. See pics off my 62.

Thanks John! I've been doing some searching since I posted the pics and I believe the unit is off a 56 with D6 cast date. I could be wrong but it appears they used these in 56 . someone I'm sure will chime in

I do not know a lot about C1 master cylinders. However, I don't think the "D6" is a casting date. You will note that it is part of a series of characters that begins with a "wagon wheel" symbol. This symbol denotes "Central Foundry". The "D" usually denotes the Danville, IL malleable/nodular iron foundry. As a matter of fact, Danville was a major supplier of castings for Delco-Moraine, especially during the C1 period. The "6" is likely a pattern number.

IF there is a date on this casting, it's likely the "188" with the screw heads on either end. However, IF it represents a date, I believe this just represents the julian day of the year with no reference to year. Why would they include only the day of the year and no reference to year? Well, my guess is that the foundry or Delco-Moraine had only a VERY short-term interest in dates for castings. They may have wanted to know day of the year for quality control purposes (as completely different from long-term durability or warranty purposes), but, for that purpose, the year would be obvious to them.

The "233" master cylinder was used in 1956 and early 1957. They were not dated.

Large 022 from January '59, small 022 before. (no date coding)
