    '67 L88 tranny on eBay ?? comments

Per Chevrolet (Colvin) data, only 1967 L88 Corvettes had the M22; no passenger or Chevelle. This one pops up on eBay with VIN 7S120875, assembled June 8th 1967. Claims original GM gears (but not necessarily original to this trans -- my comment ). Is this VIN one of the known L88 cars ??

A year ago, I had what I thought was an M-22 drain plug and asked here if the picture I posted was the real deal plug. I was told "not even close". After reading this eBay auction, that type of plug is shown here except it's an M-22 fill plug, not a drain plug, with the letter W on it. Below that one is my plug that I thought (or now apparently is) an M-22 fill plug along with the responses I got here. Sure hope I didn't throw it out, it's probably worth some money! PT

Patrick -- Here's pics of magnetic plugs out of M22 trannys that I have. The left is the earlier design [1969-ish ?], the right is 1971 period.

I have a bone original 1966 M21 with a "W" underlined fill; my early '65 '325' case has a plain fill plug. Also, NOS over-the-counter '661' cases have the 2nd (Lisle) style; both drain & fill, of course. Heck, maybe ALL '661' cases had 'em .

I wonder if the magnetic plugs have anything (time wise) to do with the elimination of the magnetic doughnut glued to the case bottom .

Assuming that the VIN derivative stamping is legit, all we really know about this transmission is that the MAIN CASE was originally installed in a 1967 Corvette or Impala assembled in St. Louis. Every other component could be not originally part of the transmission this main case was part of. The drain plug could, of course, easily have been added to a case not originally so-equipped.

Joe -- Upon closer examination of the eBay pics, I see the seller has cleverly not shown the '010' case casting #; probably because it is NOT TFP for a June 8th 1967 Muncie product. Could be one of two reasons; (a) it's a 660 or 661 case from later years (notice the width of the flange/stamp pad where the P7H08 is; double the width of same on 1966 or 67 production casting). Or (b); it was a service casting '010' -- I'm not even sure they did a run of these, as the cluster shaft was already 1" dia. on the '010'. [they DID, however, run a batch of '64-5 '325' cases to satisfy the demand for service on the 7/8" dia. shaft; these were probably done in the '68-up period and have the wide stamp pad/flange, but with the '325' casting # (although it's pretty faint)].

Couldn't have been other than a Corvette (per Colvin) and now Phil C. has said (above) it's not one of the known L88 VINs. It can't be passenger (Biscayne, Belair, Impala, Impala SS) because the VIN range to agree with an early June Muncie would probably be in the 70-75,000 range [if production roughly at the 1965 rate, for which I have monthly figures]. No Chevelles made at St.Louis (per Colvin).

So it looks like a "tribute" M22 .

The P7H08 stramping is correct to have the wide stramp pad, I have several of these cases in stock...
As far as this being an original M-22, it looks to me he came up with the gear set, and found a main case with and "S" VIN, so he's calling it a Corvette M-22...
All of the original early M-22's Iv'e had came with the "magnetic" script lisle plug for the fill and drain(1965-69)
As far as the case having a drain plug, I put them in all the time, its just a 1/2"NPT tap...
The 1970 Model year and later all Muncie cases were drilled and tapped for a fill and drain plug, these cases used the "lisle" on the diagonal magnetic plug...
              Hope this helps... Crash
