Re: how do you dull down door jams??
Michael,
I have read hair spray will tone the paint down but I have never seen how it looks, also, the hair spray will wipe off with water.- Top

Re: how do you dull down door jams??
I bought a can of spray on lacquer for the exact same color code as my car from Color Rite in Pa. Mask the car and shoot it on, it dries in 15 minutes to a very nice, unbuffed dull finish. If you don't like the looks, after judging it can be easily removed with lacquer thinner. PT- Top

Re: how do you dull down door jams??
Michael the best way would be to re-do the jams with a satin clear. If you don't want to go through the expense you could try 4000 grit sandpaper and sand with water. Don't forget other areas have to be addressed if they are base coat / clear coat.- Top

Re: how do you dull down door jams??
Mike,
You can purchase a flating base that gets mixed in with the paint before application. The flatting base is available at your paint supplier. I use this to give the jams the look of the original. Usually one part of flating base with 4 parts of color gives the right appearance.- Top

Re: how do you dull down door jams??
Considering that all of the paint on my '64 is now about the sheen judges expect to see on door jambs, I've not dulled paint on my car.
JMHO, but I figure you would be more prone to produce an inconsistent/irregular and therefore undesireable end result when using either 0000 steel wool or a Scotchbrite pad unless you are very careful.
I have heard that there is a modelers spray paint (some level of satin clear) that is used by model railroaders to knock down the sheen on railroad cars.
I have seen jambs that were dulled to the extreme. You probably do not want to end up with a finish that is totally flat.
Like Chuck says, lots of ink on this subject in the archives.
