    C-3 accumulator (drier)

On the bottoms of two driers I see 9 M F and on the other 1 H Y stamped into the metal. What is the significance?

Scott, I'm catching up and I'm surprised no one responded to your question. I think it must have slipped past everyone; I'll boot it back up to the top.

It helps to have the build date of the car the part came from...with that information, I've been able to figure out most date codes on my car. If the part was bought loose from a used parts vendor, it's harder to learn to date parts because you have no idea where they came from.

The stamp has to be a date code, but I can't figure out the last letter. My opinion is the first drier is from an early 70; the "9" for 1969 and the "M" for December. I don't know what the "F" means...if it were the week of the month, I would expect it to be a number between 1 and 5. It could be the supplier or plant.

The second drier seems to be from an early 72; the "1" for 1971, and H for August. All of the above is predicated on the part number or configuration being appropriate for 70-72 years.

Thanks, Chuck. Both driers were bought off eBay as restored. My original drier is still on my '70 and I can't see any characters stamped on the bottom of the bottle. My intent was to replace the drier as I believe the dessicant has long since done its job and is clogging the COND line. When I had the system charged with refrigerant last year the line to the drier (EVAP) was cold and sweaty but the line out (COND) was room temperature. I am still using R-12.

Scott, My 72 Air car there is no date on the bottom, and believe to be original,

As far as the A/C system, The problems I have seen have been under charged systems, if the evap. inlet pipe is cold (on top) then the temp. of the air coming from vents should be the same. The dryer bag. I have never heard of one coming apart.but there ability to remove mositure does and can create problems within the system.

Scott, I took a closer look at my 72 air car and there is a date on the bottom of the dryer, which I never noted, mine is 2CX which does match the date of my 4/72 car.

Chuck, have you seen this dated part judged before ?

Others will have answer definitively on the AC drier...most of my judging has been chassis.

On most primary components, dates are judged if they are easily visible. I wouldn't say this date is easy to see, but I suppose it's possible to see it. In this case, it likely depends on the judge and the amount of time available for judging.
