Is 1973 different than earlier in this regard? On all earlier engines I'm aware of, the cover and bolts were painted with the engine.

Are you talking about the bellhousing cover plate? The plates I see are black or natural.

            Lyle------

Yes, the bellhousing cover plate is what I'm referring to. If the 1973 plates were originally black or natural steel, then the 1973 engines must have been painted differently than earlier and the plates must have been installed after engine painting. C2 and, at least, 1968-72 plates and attaching bolts were painted with the engine and were Chevrolet orange.

The AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION undercovers were not painted with the engine, though, and are usually black or natural.
