    1967 shift linkage adjustment

Is there a way to adjust the shift linkage on a 67 with trans and shifter out of car? This shift linkage mounts to chassie not trans. Also I read in past post about long shift and short shift and putting linkage in different holes. I see no two sets of holes?

The linkage really needs to be adjusted with the shifter mounting bracket attached to the crossmember; I don't know any way to do it on the bench.

Photo below shows the shift levers on the transmission - the holes at the end of the levers, as shown, are in the factory "long-throw" position. Connecting the rods to the other hole, closer to the pivot, results in the "short-throw" configuration. If your levers don't have the alternate hole closer to the pivot, you don't have '67 shift levers on the transmission.

Thanks John, I was wrong about the holes. They are there. Is the linkage adjustment done from above? My hands aren't small enough to do it from below.

It's done from below; you'll need to fabricate a gage with a bend in it to insert it in the slot in the shifter housing. The gage to set the neutral gate is 1/8" thick, and .646" wide; with the body off, a tongue depressor makes a simple gage.

Thanks John, That's the way I have done it in the past. Was wondering if there was a easier way. I'll leave the body on and do it as before.

            John,

Does this gage go all the way through the lower slots? I tries this and the tab on the shifter handle sems to be in the way of the gage going all the way through.

            Thanks

            Jerry

The gage is designed to extend exactly 1" inboard from the outer face of the housing - see photos below.

The only way I was ever able to adjust the shifter on my '67 L79 4Spd was laying on my back and using ntrial and error. The end result was good though!

If you look to the right of the adjustment slot on John's picture there is a half moon shaped cut out that can be viewed from below and behind the crossmember.

This is what I used to visually adjust the rods as in my post yesterday. Each shifter lever does not have a noticable half moon but it's obvious and simple to adjust to where they would clear if a gauge is placed here.

                    John,

Does this 1" just go under the levers for 1,2,3,4th and not reverse? or is it thin enough to go under all the levers?

                    Thanks

                    Jerry
